Servus Collection Cross (X) Wooden Wick in Exotic Wood – 80 × 10 mm – Set of 20

Servus Collection
55,49 RON

The set contains 20 wicks. The metal stand is NOT included and is ordered separately.

A cross-shaped wick of exotic wood, laser cut: 80 × 10 mm, 0.6 mm thick. For candles poured in containers.

Tested in the Servus workshop, with a single wick: soy 6–6.5 cm · granules 7–8 cm · paraffin 5.5–6 cm. Below these ranges, switch to the straight wick.

The cross burns along two lines at right angles: a wider flame, more even heat in the melt pool.

The set contains 20 wicks. The metal stand is NOT included and is ordered separately: you'll find it here. Without it, the wick won't stand straight in the container when you pour.

A wick of exotic hardwood, laser cut, in the shape of a cross. Two 0.6 mm strips that slot into each other, 80 mm long, 10 mm wide. Used for candles poured in containers.

Why a cross and not a straight wick

A straight wick burns along a single line. The cross burns along two, at right angles, so the flame is wider and more symmetrical, and the heat goes out in four directions instead of two. That is why it covers wider containers than a straight wick of the same width.

Sînziana says: “You come to this cross when the straight wick has left you with cold edges. It isn't better than the straight one, it's a different tool: it spreads the heat more evenly, but it needs a glass to match. In a small jar you'll get a flame that's too big and burn the wax for nothing. Choose by diameter, not by looks.”

Tested in the Servus workshop

The figures below come from our burn tests, with a single wick. They are starting points, not promises: the container diameter, the wax recipe and the amount of fragrance change the result.

Wax Container diameter, single wick
Soy wax 6 – 6.5 cm
Granule / sand-type wax 7 – 8 cm
Paraffin 5.5 – 6 cm

These are the widest ranges among our straight and cross wooden wicks: in granules it reaches up to 8 cm with a single wick. Below these ranges it burns too hard; there, the choice is the straight wick.

How it behaves in production

  • A wide, symmetrical flame. The melt pool opens round, not elongated, and reaches the walls faster than with a straight wick.
  • In a container that's too narrow it burns too hard. The flame becomes large and unsteady, and the wax is used up too fast.
  • Wood isn't a uniform material. The grain isn't identical from one piece to the next, and that shows in the burn. With each new batch, burn a test piece before a run.
  • The crackle depends on the combination. In some recipes and containers, the wick gives a gentle crackle, like wood in a fireplace. It happens often, but not with every wax and every diameter.

Fitting on the metal stand

The metal stand holds the base of the wick in the container and keeps it upright while you pour. It is ordered separately: Stable metal stand for wooden wicks, with four clips, which also suits the cross shape.

Why we sell the stands separately. A wooden wick is cut to the height of the glass, and the offcuts make good pieces for smaller candles. The stands, on the other hand, get used up faster than the wicks. In the workshop we work with them separately, so we use the material right to the end.

What this wick doesn't do

  • It is NOT a wick for every candle. The same piece burns differently in different recipes. The range in the table is the starting point, not the verdict.
  • It is NOT suitable for small containers. Below the range in the table it burns too hard. There, use the straight wick.
  • It is NOT a pillar wick. It is designed for container candles, on a metal stand. For candles poured in moulds, with stearin, go for the braided cotton wick.
  • The crackle can't be promised. It depends on the wax and the diameter.
  • It does NOT come with a metal stand. It is ordered separately.

Even when the dimensions are exact, the result depends on the container, the wax, the fragrance and the burning conditions. Before a large run, test on the final recipe.

The right-hand column isn't decoration. What says “measured”, we checked ourselves. What says “stated by the manufacturer” comes from the manufacturer's data sheet and we haven't tested it: we pass it on as it was given to us, with their name on it.

Step by step

  1. Start from the container diameter and the wax you are pouring.
  2. Below the range in the table, switch to the straight wick. Above it, use two wicks, equally spaced from the centre.
  3. Slot the two strips together and fit the cross on the metal stand before pouring.
  4. Cut the length to the height of the glass, with the wick already fixed.
  5. The burn test: light it and read it after 2–3 hours. The melt pool should reach the edge. Too small: move to two wicks. An unsteady flame that jumps: you have too much wick for that diameter.
  6. Change one variable at a time and note the batch, wax, fragrance and diameter.

From the tests carried out in the Servus workshop, the guide recommendations are: soy wax 6–6.5 cm, granule / sand wax 7–8 cm, paraffin 5.5–6 cm. The values are a guide and can vary depending on the candle recipe.

Yes. You fit the cross on the metal stand before pouring and cut the length to the height of the glass, with the wick already fixed, as in the step-by-step guide on this page. The offcuts make good pieces for smaller candles.

The cross wooden wick is used mainly for candles poured in containers, where a wider flame and a better spread of heat in the melt pool are needed.

The cross wick is made of two pieces that slot together in an X shape, which gives it a larger burning surface than a straight wick. In practice, this means a wider flame and more efficient melting of the wax in wider containers.

The cross wick is compatible with soy wax, paraffin and granule / sand wax, but its behaviour differs depending on the wax composition, the fragrance, the additives and the container diameter. Workshop tests are still recommended.

Yes, and the metal stand is NOT included and is ordered separately. The set contains 20 wicks, without stands. The stand holds the base of the wick in the container and keeps it upright while you pour; without it, the wick leans in the still-soft wax. The stand with four clips also suits the cross shape. We sell them separately because the wick is cut to the height of the container and reusable pieces are left over, while the stands get used up faster.

The wooden wick is trimmed to 0.5 cm above the surface of the wax.

Wood is not a uniform material, and the wicks can vary in grain, in their own oils and in their own moisture of approximately 6–10%. These differences can slightly affect the size of the flame, the burn rate or the intensity of the crackle.

Yes, but the strength of the fragrance can affect how it burns. For scented candles, the recommendation is to run full burn tests with the final recipe.

The cross wick is made from exotic hardwood, with a calibrated thickness of 0.6 mm, laser cut for even edges and a controlled burn.
