Special wick no. 5: a round, unwaxed cotton wick for candles in beeswax, paraffin and blends with stearin or rapeseed; Schreiber GmbH, RD series. We use it in the workshop for candles rolled from honeycomb sheets: primed in wax and fitted with the V of the braid pointing down, it handles Ø 2.5–4.5 cm in rolled candles and 2–4 cm in poured ones. Per the technical data sheet: BF-21 treatment, borax-free, 47 threads, yield 588 m/kg. It is not waxed and has no metal tab: for container candles, choose the waxed wick with tab.

Special wick no. 5 is a round wick of 100% braided cotton, with one flat face carrying a V-shaped braid: unwaxed, with BF-21 treatment, borax-free. It is made by Schreiber GmbH (Neuhof, Germany), RD series, and the manufacturer's documentation lists it explicitly for beeswax candles (tealights or pillars), alongside 100% paraffin and blends of paraffin with stearin, rapeseed or beeswax. No other wick type in the Servus range has beeswax named directly by the manufacturer in its data sheet. That is why it is our choice for pure beeswax candles and for makers working towards “natural product” claims: the wick brings nothing into the recipe apart from cotton, because you prime it yourself, in your own wax.
Sînziana says: “Our candles rolled from honeycomb sheets, for events and decorative pieces, in many colours, rely on this wick. The secret isn't the wick itself, but two steps before rolling: you soak it in a thin coat of melted wax, so the first lighting has something to live on, and you lay it with the V of the braid pointing down, towards the base of the candle. The manufacturer's data sheet gives it for 2–4 cm in poured candles; in rolled candles, where there is air between the layers, it easily handles 4.5 cm. What we haven't tested, we tell you needs testing.”
The recommendations come from workshop practice; the manufacturer's data sheet covers poured candles, and the range for rolled candles is measured by us.
| Candle type | Diameter for no. 5 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Poured (beeswax, paraffin, blends with stearin, rapeseed) | Ø 2–4 cm | manufacturer's data sheet |
| Rolled from honeycomb sheet | Ø 2.5–4.5 cm (1–3 sheets) | Servus workshop |
| Above 4.5 cm rolled / 4 cm poured | move up to Special wick no. 7 | |
A complete system tested in the workshop: this wick + waxes for moulds (pillar); in the same place you'll also find the honeycomb wax sheets for rolled candles. If you pour or roll steady volumes, we'd like to see you in Servus Club.
Full diagnosis: the Servus guide to choosing a wick.
Even when the specs are clear, the result depends on the diameter, the wax and the type of candle. Before a large production run, make one test piece on the final recipe.

For pure beeswax candles, tealights or pillars, for paraffin and for blends of paraffin with stearin, rapeseed or beeswax, per the manufacturer’s documentation. In the Servus workshop we also use it for candles rolled from honeycomb sheets, for events and decorative pieces. It isn’t designed for containers in soy or coconut wax: there, use the waxed wick with tab.
Yes, and that is exactly why we keep it in the range. The wick is unwaxed cotton, and the manufacturer approves it in the technical data sheet for 100% beeswax. You prime it in your own wax, so nothing goes into the finished product beyond your own recipe. For your certification file, we can provide the Schreiber technical data sheet and safety data sheet.
In two steps. First, priming: soak the wick in a thin coat of melted wax and let it harden straight, otherwise the first lighting is temperamental. Then positioning: the flat face has a V-shaped braid, and the V is laid pointing down, towards the base of the candle. Fitted the other way round, the wick burns, but the flame isn’t steady; we checked this in the workshop.
For poured candles, Ø 2 to 4 cm, per the manufacturer’s data sheet. For candles rolled from honeycomb sheets, Ø 2.5 to 4.5 cm, that is 1 to 3 sheets, a range measured in the workshop. The difference has a physical explanation: a rolled candle has air between the layers and weighs almost half as much as a poured one of the same diameter, so the same wick handles a larger diameter. Above these ranges, move up to no. 7.
Three common causes, in order of likelihood. The wick wasn’t primed in wax before fitting. The wick was fitted the wrong way round, with the V of the braid pointing up instead of down. Or the candle’s diameter is beyond the wick’s range and the candle tunnels. Check them in this order, changing one thing at a time, and burn a test piece after each correction.
It isn’t the first choice. No. 5 has no metal tab and isn’t waxed, so in a container you would have to fit a tab yourself and prime it. For containers there is the waxed wick with tab, ready assembled, which you stick down and pour straight away. No. 5 remains the choice for poured, rolled and tealight beeswax candles, where a clean composition matters.
Because we use it ourselves. The manufacturer is named, Schreiber GmbH, RD series, and our candles rolled from honeycomb sheets, for events and decorative pieces, rely on this wick. Each order comes from an identifiable batch, and when your recipe doesn’t work out, you get a technical diagnosis, not excuses. Makers with steady volumes get dedicated terms in Servus Club.
